Bonsai

Who knew something so small needed so much work? I was visiting my parents a few weeks back when I decided to visit the local nursery. Needed to get out of the house for a bit and surround myself with nature. Not as good as walking around in the forest but hey I live in the city. Anyway, while I was poking around I started to think about some of the cool trees I had seen while I was living in China. One of my favourites is the Lacebark Pine (Pinus bungeana), a beautiful tree you find near temples and shrines. I didn’t know the name of the tree at the time so I asked one of the staff. As luck would have it he (let’s call him Bob) was very interested in Japanese gardens, and was quite familiar with the ornamental plants of China and Japan. One thing led to another and soon we were talking about Bonsai - one of Bob’s passions. Bob had been studying Bonsai for a few years and was working on a few dozen plants some of which were on sale. I had always dreamed about owning a Bonsai. Now was the chance. One swipe of my credit card and the Bonsai was mine.

Lesson #1 - You do not own a Bonsai.

Despite the fact that a bonsai is a plant, they are a lot like children. You need to feed and water a bonsai, you need to train a bonsai, you need to shelter a bonsai, you also need to change the soil every few years? Sound familiar? You do not own a bonasi, you have the pleasure of taking care of one for a few years.

Lesson #2 - Bonsai time is really, really slow.

I like to keep moving. Staying in one place has always been a problem. Maybe I am hyperactive? Maybe I drink too much coffee? I don’t know but I am probably better suited to ping pong than Bonsai. The first day I bought my Bonsai I trimmed a few branches. The next day I trimmed a few more. Unfortunately I think I am trimming faster than my Bonsai is growing. Better slow down.

Lesson #3 - Bonsai is the new Volvo.

You can spot a Yuppie a mile away, just look for the Volvo. At least that was true in the 90’s. I guess the same thing could be said of Bonsai. This is definitely not your everyman kind of gardening. Bonsai is what it is not. Deep eh? The beauty is in the details. Layers, textures, form. These are the words that are used to describe Bonsai. Does owning a Bonsai make you cooler?

Ok, enough about Bonsai. When I get access to a digital camera I will take a picture. I will close this post with an expression.  Not sure if this saying originates in China or Japan but it does seem to sum up the way of the Bonsai.
